Mold Health Issues

Posted on June 21, 2008

Everybody knows that mold is unsightly and can cause health problems, but exactly what kinds of health problems are we talking about here?  We shouldn’t just be concerned with the respiratory or skin effects of mold, because these are not even close to being the only things that mold can cause in a person.

Mold can produce allergic reactions in people by producing allergens, irritants, and toxic substances called mycotoxins.  No matter what kind of mold you’re dealing with, it’s a bad idea to touch it or inhale any of its spores.  Some molds can cause cold or flu-like symptoms or in infants, even bleeding of the lungs.  Incessant coughing, asthma, allergy symptoms, and vision can occur and even problems with a person’s central nervous system can arise.  Abnormal amounts of fatique, headaches, problems with your sinuses, vomiting, and sometimes even cancer can be caused by mold infestations in the home or the workplace.  Where mold is concerned, you’re basically playing roulette: you don’t know which number is going to come up or for who.

Air conditioners are one of the worst culprits of spreading mold infestations from one area of the building to the other.  They thrust the mold spores up into the air and you inhale them, drawing them into your lungs, and this can be dangerous, especially if you’re one of the people who are particularly at risk for sickness.  This includes infants, pets, the elderly, and anyone who has a weakened immune system.  People with weakened immune systems are those who are pregnant, people who have just had surgery, or those with HIV, AIDs, or other immunodeficiency conditions.

Most people don’t realize that there are so many health complications that can be caused by mold and since this is true, they don’t understand how big of a problem mold can be in the home.  They think that they will be alright if they put off removing the mold until they can afford it, but it’s not a good idea.

People with good constitutions and are generally healthy can survive in a home that has a mild amount of mold for a while without any adverse health effects, but staying there without any attempts to treat the home and remove the mold can be a costly mistake.   If you discover mold where you live, you should do what you have to in order to get the mold removed or find another place to live.

Aspergillus Mold

Posted on June 18, 2008

Aspergillus is a genus of mold that can be found indoors. Some species of this genus can be detrimental to human beings and pets and have the ability to cause Aspergillosis.

Aspergillosis is the name of a variety of different diseases that are caused by Aspergillus molds. Those who have weak immune systems, such as infants and the elderly, and those who have compromised immune systems, such as people with HIV, AIDs, or other diseases that weaken the body are particularly at risk to develop one of many forms of Aspergillosis.

The symptoms of Aspergillosis can include cough, chest pain or trouble breathing, and fever. Typically only people with immune systems that are already weak or who already suffer from other kinds of lung diseases are in danger of developing the disease. Major forms of the disease that occur in human beings are allergic aspergillosis, which affects cystic fibrosis, asthma, and sinusitis patients, acute invasive aspergillosis, and disseminated invasive aspergillosis. The most common species of Aspergillus molds that cause diseases in humans and animals are Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus.

Something named after the Aspergillus genus is an aspergilloma, which is also called a mycetoma or a fungus ball. This is a collection of fungus which exists in a cavity in a person or animal’s body such as the lungs and Aspergillus is the culptrit of most of these infections. Most people who have aspergillomas don’t have any symptoms that are related to the fungus growing inside them and so people often live for decades without knowing about their infection. The most common symptom of having aspergillomas is the coughing up of blood or hemoptysis; this blood loss is usually not consequential, merely a sign that aspergillomas could exist in the body.

These diseases not only occur in humans, but also in plants and animals. Wasted grain with aspergillus mold colonies growing on it and feed lots in the area around Burley, Idaho is suspected to have caused the death of over 2,000 mallard ducks. Moldy grain was also the cause of death in about 500 mallards in 2005 in Iowa.

While some Aspergillus molds can be harmful to human beings, other molds from this genus are used commercially, particularly in Japan where beverages such as sake are fermented using Aspergillus oryzae. Aspergillus niger is also used as a major source of citric acid and it accounts for over 99% of the globe’s citric acid production and this is total to more than 4.5 million metric tons a year.

Historic Charleston

Posted on May 19, 2008

Looking for a vibrant community in which to retire, one with that feels more like home than heaven’s waiting room? Instead of the usual suspects – Arizona, Florida, California – why not check out historic Charleston. Real estate prices here are a fraction of what they are elsewhere, the cost of living is lower, and the medical facilities are on par with if not better than what you’ll find elsewhere. Old historic beachfront mansions, restored plantation homes, and a history of real estate price increases all paint the picture of a Charleston that has historically been and will continue to be a good place to live and to invest.

If I had to pick my favorite true southern city, I’d have to pick Charleston. The historic waterfront, the fantastic restaurants and shopping, and the beautiful weather all make Charleston a lovely city in which to reside. What’s more, Charleston real estate won’t set you back much more than comparable real estate in, say, Savannah, where you won’t even get beachfront or waterfront. Whether it’s a historic plantation-style house or a condo near the college, Charleston real estate is worth every penny.

Florida homes

Posted on May 19, 2008

Last week, I flew to a real estate brokerage to see about a job in Jacksonville, FL. Real Estate isn’t necessarily my top career choice but a job with the best real estate broker in southern Florida wouldn’t be so bad. I learned that this brokerage is getting some of the highest prices for sellers while also managing to sell more property than other brokers who would short-sell their sellers’ homes. What’s more, Jacksonville is poised to see a big recovery in housing prices following a bit of turmoil, which only means that commissions will be going up, up, up. The company specializes in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas, especially Ponte Vedra and Atlantic beach. That bit of diversity would probably keep things interesting enough for me to stick around.

Jacksonville Real Estate

Posted on May 19, 2008

A lot of people feel like they missed out during this last housing boom. But those who bought Jacksonville Real Estate are feeling the pain in a big way now, with median prices on single-family homes falling over 12% year over year. Many are also quick to point out that now is a real buyers’ market with the potential to realize gains more permanent gains on an investment in a home than they would have been if you had bought in, say, 2004.

Stachybotrys Mold And You

Posted on April 7, 2008

We all know mold causes health damage, but one mold in particular called Stachybotrys chartarum can be extremely dangerous. Stachybotrys is the mold that most people think about when they think of “black mold” and for good reason.

Stachybotrys (sometimes called simply “stachy”) grows on water damaged wood and paper, but where it does not grow is plastic, the tiles in our kitchens and bathrooms, and concrete. Wood and water that has gotten wet and allowed to dry that way will become infected with the mold and it will spread to other areas in your house. It requires almost constant moisture in order to grow and thrive. Wet clothing tossed in the backs of closets and forgotten about is often found to have mold growing upon it. Stachy mold is usually a greenish-black, wet, and slimy when found and it requires cellulose products like paper, wood, and cotton in order to grow long term. Although the spores of wet mold do not easily enter the air, if the mold is allowed to dry out, it becomes more of a health hazard.

While stachy mold is not the only kind or even really the most common kind of mold found growing in these conditions, it is still one of the most dangerous kinds of mold to allow in your home or office because it kills brain cells and has similar symptoms to Alzheimer’s Disease. If you or anyone in your home are experiencing disorientation, memory loss, and the inability to think logically at times and are not at the age to be at risk for Alzheimer’s, a test for mold should be done to determine if this is the cause.

Common health complications due to exposure to this mold include asthma, pneumonitis, skin rashes, bloody noses, headaches, and other respiratory problems. Prolonged exposure can cause internal bleeding of the lungs, kidney failure, and liver failure. Pulmonary emphysema can also be caused by prolonged exposure to this and other black molds.

This mold is particularly likely to show up in homes or buildings that have been flooded or extensively water damaged and areas where constant leaks are present, such as water pipes and hot water heaters. Just touching this mold can cause skin rashes and because of the excessive health risks associated with it, it is often recommended that only trained mold removal specialists should be used to remove it from a home or building where it is present.

How to Choose the Orange Beach Hotel That’s Right for You

We all know that choosing the right accommodations for a vacation is just as important as choosing the location itself.  In Orange Beach, Al. this is such a true reality.

You can choose between locations that offer such activities as dolphin cruises to outdoor concerts.  Watching sea turtle hatchings to golf and hundreds of exclusive shops.  As a result, your accommodations can play a major factor in the direction that your vacation plans take.  Below are some very important issues to factor in when deciding what kind of accommodations and where in Orange Beach, Al. you want to be located.

First thing you need to figure out is what your goals are.  Do you just want to enjoy the sand and surf, if so you want to be certain to stay beach side in one of the many beautiful facilities?  Particularly if you like to walk the beach early in the morning or enjoy a late night stroll.  You may want to consider an ocean view or even an ocean side room.  If you are bringing the whole family, you will probably need a suite.  In many cases, this could be much more economical in a condominium rental rather than a hotel.

Maybe your are more the adventurous type.  Do you want to see and experience new things?  If so ask around before making reservations, as property managers who own vacation rentals often have personal relationships with the owners of local attractions and could offer coupon booklets or even discount codes for multiple adventures such as helicopter rides, SCUBA and snorkeling lessons and even deep sea fishing.  Orange Beach is know for its diverse natural setting, so if you prefer to just experience nature from behind the windscreen of a speedboat or through the glass-bottom of a dolphin cruise,  the potential savings and new experiences are well worth the minimal research.

Are you looking for romance or a vacation the whole family can enjoy?  A great way to bond with loved ones is to learn something new together.  Golf is a perfect way to get a loved one involved in something that they can share with you for years.  Many of the local golf courses are set within the pristine beauty of the area, making nature lovers, fans of the sport and romantically inclined spouses all happy as you travel the dunes and hit some balls.  Before you make reservations, investigate the different golfing packages offered by your hotel.  It may be worth mentioning to the manager or property owner that you have some golfing to do.  You may find a great package just by mentioning it.
